Arc volcanoes discharge large quantities of H2O, CO2 and  SO2. Some volcanoes discharge huge SO2, some are not. Some arcs are very fertile in base metals, producing many metallic deposits.  I am interested in understanding the reasons why some arcs are very fertile, how metallic elements are transferred from subducting slabs to arc magmas via sub-arc mantle (i.e., element recycling), how volatile elements are subducted and moved to the interior of mantle wedges where arc magmas are generated..

To understand the processes and paths, I examine forearc mantle peridotites (serpentinites, xenoliths) and primitive arc magmas.

The research involves the following areas of study.

Study 1. Study of forearc mantle peridotites (Himalayas, Alps, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Japan).
Serpentin is stable down to a depth of ~ 130 km and contain high contents of water (up to 17  wt%). Therefore, serpentin is a reservoir of water and fluid-mobile elements in the mantle. A layer of serpentinites forms at the base of mantle wedges as subducting slabs release water and fluid-mobile elements,, such as arsenic, antimony, strontium and lead. The serpentinites are dragged down to deep levels by mantle corner flow and eventually dehydrated back to anhydrous phases. The dehydration of forearc mantle serpentinites discharges water to the interior of mantle wedges, which results in partial melting of arc magmas.

Study 2. Composition of primitive arc magmas and subarc mantle

The composition of subarc mantle is studied using primitive arc magmas and xenoliths that were brought up to the surface by explosive arc igneous rocks.

Cees Jan de Hoog carried out a study, primitive mafic magmas at Mount Pinatubo. His research is mainly based on the compositions of melt inclusions. He is the Manager of the Geochemistry Laboratory at Oxford University, UK.

Jian Wang studied the compositions of subarc mantle as his PhD thesis project. His work  has been published in Contributions to Mineralogy and Petrology, Lithos and Mineralogy and Petrology.  He is currently Professor at Jilin University.
