    IN SUMMARY - Stacey Smith?
This is a deeply frustrating book. It has some moments of real wonder and worldbuilding in the delightful paradise and the vivid descriptions of the Yewans. But it commits rookie error after rookie error: if you can disambiguate Fala and Fran, you're a better reader than I am. Worse, one of them is with the Firebrand and the other the fighters, so good luck figuring out who is who. There's a character with a name far too close to "Nazi" for comfort. Worse, the last quarter is a mad rush of exposition, which absolutely does not pay off the buildup. There are also a couple of weird moments, such as when Ruby is confronted with her privilege and responds in a way that no person with privilege ever has, or the Doctor deciding everything is the fault of the patriarchy. These are fine sentiments to express (and I'm a queer trans lefty from wayback myself), but what they lack is any elegance or embedding them into the story, as opposed to just dropping them on the page like awkward turds. It's a shame, because my frustrations should not have overwhelmed what is otherwise a potentially really interesting story with a fascinating alien culture.
