Prospective students:
Students are engaged in all aspects of research and lab operation. Grad students lead their own projects, on which we collaborate directly (not via a "senior supervisor"), and share with me responsibility for advance. Group members are encouraged to collaborate with others within and outside the group, a practice that many find immense fun, and which reinforces collegiality and inventiveness. Postdocs work on separate projects: this enriches the training environment while ensuring that student experience is not diluted by diminished project ownership. A relatively small group (ca. 8) enables my direct involvement with all members.

I welcome curiousity, input, and free-thinking discussion; if you're happiest following instructions, I'm not your man (so to speak). I want you to think independently about your experiments, to discuss them with me, and to situate your work within a critical literature context. Our group has a culture of engagement and high expectations: it produces graduates who can contribute at a high level technically, creatively, and intellectually, in a broad range of contexts, and at all training levels. For rewarding positions now held by graduates, see below.

Current Graduate Students and Postdoctoral Researchers

Daniel Luis do Nascimento (Ph.D. candidate)

Daniel is from Sao Carlos, Brazil, where he completed his B.Sc. in chemistry at University of Sao Paulo. During his undergraduate studies Daniel worked on biomaterials mineralization, and its applications in regeneration of bone tissue. He also attended the University of Pennsylvania from August 2013 to December 2014, where he worked with Professor Dan Mindiola on the synthesis of transition metal complexes with unusual metal-ligand multiple bonds. Daniel joined the Fogg group to unravel the mysteries behind the mechanism of metallacyclobutane decomposition, in order to develop more stable catalysts.

Xinrui Ou

Xinrui, a graduate of Sichuan University and Yu Scholarship recipient, is studying rates of catalyst initiation and recapture in metathesis.

Immanuel Reim

Immanuel is a joint PhD student between the Fogg and Jensen groups (Bergen, Norway), who is working toward E-selective metathesis.
