• Co-organizer of the Math Horizon Day: Since 2001, I co-organize this one day activity in the Department of Mathematics. An average of 20 schools participate in this day every year, each school with a team of 4 students. In the morning, the students listen to a lecture on a certain topic or they see a movie related to math. In the afternoon, teams are put together for a relay type competition. Prizes and trophies are distributed at the end of the day.
• Co-organizer of ESSO-CMS Math camp: Since the summer of 2000, I Co-organized the CMS-Math summer Camp at the University of Ottawa with Dr. Graham Wright, the Executive director of the CMS. Duties include: Decide on a list of invitees for the camp chosen from the best performers in national math competitions like Cayley, Pascal and Opti-math, prepare a program for the camp, provide material for the lectures and for the competitions done during the week long activity, give a lecture and participate in most other activities of the camp.

Special Projects

• Linear Algebra close to earth. One of the major difficulties encountered in first year mathematics courses by students registered in programs other than mathematics is that they do not see the relevance of the material for their chosen fields. This can seriously affect their motivation in the course, and their ultimate success. This effect seems to be most pronounced in first year Linear Algebra whereas calculus is more readily seen to be useful. In order to stimulate the interest in Linear Algebra, I was involved in a project of selecting a wide variety of problems that arise in different topics of that discipline. The above website was created by me for a project designed by Dr. Barry Jessup, with funding provided by the University of Ottawa Excellence in Education Prize.
• Linear Algebra Questions Bank. I was also involoved in a project to create a practice questions bank in linear algebra. The bank contains hundreds of questions divided in seven categories covering all topics of first and second year linear algebra. Only University of Ottawa students registered in a linear algebra course have access to this bank.
• The Problem of the Month. I organize a web based monthly competition open to Grade 10 and 11 students in Ontario and “secondaire” 3 and 4 in Quebec. This activity is sponsored by the Department of Mathematics and Statistics and the faculty of Science at the University of Ottawa and was initially funded by an Excellence in Education Prize awarded to Dr.Thierry Giordano.
