I am a geologist by training (both B.Sc. and M.Sc. in geology), but I became interested in aqueous geochemistry during my Ph.D., when I studied the formation of iron oxides in lake sediments, under the supervision of Dr. André Tessier. After observing bacteria in my iron oxide samples, I became intrigued and I decided to do a post-doctoral fellowship in microbiology under the supervision of late Dr. T.J. Beveridge. It did not take long before I became fascinated by the role of bacteria in element cycling and mineral formation and as a result, I became a geomicrobiologist.
