Our facility is home to several widefield fluorescence microscopes with phase contrast and DIC and digital image capture, a Nikon A1R confocal microscope, Nikon Ni-U ratiometric fluorescence microscope with dual excitation sources, Zeiss LSM 880 with Airyscan detector and Live cell chamber. We provide access to, and training on imaging platforms that allow optical characterization of living and non-living biological samples. We are particularly well-equipped to handle projects using mouse and fish model systems and 3D imaging projects.  Details of the exact instruments are below but if you have any doubt or questions as to the best way to proceed with your project please contact us.

Equipment and Fees

Nikon A1RsiMP Confocal Workstation

  • Upright Nikon FN1 Microscope platform with motorized XYZ control
  • Seven continuous wave laser lines ( 405 nm, 457 nm, 477 nm, 488 nm, 514 nm, 561 nm and 640 nm)
  • Pulsed IR laser source (700-1080 nm) for two-photon excitation
  • Galvo scanner and resonant scanner which can capture 512x512 frames up to 30 fps.
  • 4 single-photon detectors for simulatneous four channel acquisiton
  • 4 high sensitivity GaAsP NDDs for MP acquisition
  • 32-detector array for spectral imaging at nominal resolutions of 10 nm,6 nm and 2.5 nm)
  • High resolution lenses for oil immersion, dry or water dipping/immersion acquisiton
  • Simultaneous stimulation/ablation and image capture available
  • Associated workstations permit 2D and 3D deconvolution, 3D analysis and particle tracking.
  • User cost:  $ 25.00/hr conventional or spectral confocal microscopy, $30.00 for multiphoton acquisition.


Nikon Ni-U Ratiometric Fluorescence Microscope with Dual Excitation Sources


Upright Nikon Ni-U Microscope platform with motorized XYZ control

LED excitation light source (SpectraX) with lines at 390 nm, 438 nm, 475 nm, 513 nm, 549 nm, 575 nm and 632 nm.

Ultra-sensitive Andor iXon Ultra 897 cooled EMCCD camera 

Rapid filter wheel attached to 300W Lambda XL. Currently two filter sets: 340/380 for FURA; 440/490 for BCECF.

Suitable for widefield deconvolution and live-cell, live zebrafish experiments, including ratiometric ion imaging, particle tracking and cell fate studies.

Filter sets for CFP/GFP/YFP and standard blue, green, red and far red available.

Zeiss LSM 880 Confocal with Airyscan Detector and Live-cell Incubation


Zeiss AxioObserver Z1 with Definite Focus.2 Control

Six laser lines:  405, 458, 488, 514, 561, 633 nm

2 conventional PMT detectors,  1 high QE GaAsP detector plus a transmitted light detector for DIC/brightfield

Airyscan detector for enhanced resolution (up to 140 nm laterally and 400 nm axially)

Spectral imaging with linear unmixing available

Live cell imaging: humidity, temperature, O2 (hypoxia studies) and CO2 control.

Objectives: Plan Apo 20x/0.8, Plan Apo 63x/1.4, Plan Apo 100x/1.4 with DIC

Fast Scanning mode available with Airyscan detector (up to 25 fps @480x480 pixels)

Arcturus XT Laser Microdissection System


Combines infrared (IR) laser capture microdissection (LCM) and ultraviolet(UV) laser cutting on an inverted Nikon Eclipse Ti-E stand

3-Colour fluorescence imaging plus phase contrast.

Isolate cells or groups of cells for DNA/RNA isolation or microproteomic analysis

Suitable samples include thin or thick sections, fresh, frozen or formalin-fixed tissues, chromogenically or fluorescently stained and unstained sections.  Live cell cultures are feasible as well.

Bioptonics Optical Projection Tomography Scanner

Bioptonics Optical Projection Tomography Scanner


Produces 3D images of fixed and cleared animal or plant specimens or living plant specimens.

Can handle samples roughly 1.5 cm x 1.0 cm x 1 cm in size

Maximum resolution ~ 14 um in XYZ axes.

Transmitted light imaging or fluorescence with standard red (TRITC, Alexa 568) or green (FITC, GFP) fluorochromes.

Images can be analyzed using Nikon 3D analysis software.

User cost: $25.00/hr
