Mark Hannington

Antécédents

Mark Hannington a reçu son doctorat de la University of Toronto en 1989 et a passé 15 ans comme chercheur scientifique à la Commission géologique du Canada avant de joindre les rangs du corps professoral à l’Université d’Ottawa en 2005.

Activités de recherche

Sa recherche combine l’étude des volcans actifs au fond des océans et des sources hydrothermales (« cheminée-fumeurs noirs ») qui y sont associées et qui sont capables de former des gisements de métaux, avec la recherche sur les environnements volcaniques anciens où l’on trouve certains des plus importants et des plus précieux gisements minéraux au monde. Au cours des 25 dernières années, il a participé à 29 croisières de recherche sur les volcans sous-marins des dorsales du Pacifique de l’Est, de Juan de Fuca et de la Mid-Atlantique, ainsi qu’en Islande, Nouvelle-Zélande, Antarctique et Papouasie-Nouvelle Guinée. Sa recherche s’est concentrée sur l’origine des gisements de métaux de base et de métaux précieux près des volcans sousmarins, et a conduit à la découverte de gisements minéraux jusqu’alors inconnus dans le fond des océans. Récemment, les travaux du professeur Hannington ont contribué à mieux connaître l’augmentation naturelle de la concentration des métaux dans les océans issus de sources volcaniques et hydrothermales, y compris celui de métaux ayant potentiellement des impacts environnementaux éloignés du site d’origine. Ses études comparatives entre les volcans modernes et les environnements volcaniques anciens au Canada contribuent également au développement de nouveaux modèles plus performants pour l’exploration minérale sur terre. Professeur Hannington est le rédacteur en chef de la revue Economic Geology (2001-2008), qui traite des géosciences appliquées aux gisements minéraux. Economic Geology est l’une des revues scientifiques les plus anciennes en Amérique du Nord et célèbre cette année son 100ième anniversaire. Le professeur Hannington est seulement le 5ème rédacteur de ce journal et le premier provenant de l’extérieur des États-Unis.
