John Hinchey

John Hinchey completed MSc at Memorial University of Newfoundland and arrived in Ottawa in 2001. He began his PhD thesis project in the Lac des Iles area in the fall of 2002 and completed PhD in 2005.  After PhD, he happily returned to St. John's as Senior Geologist at the Newfoundland Geological Survey.

John Hinchey conducted a detailed mapping of the main ore zone at the Lac des Iles mine, northwestern Ontario. This is the only palladium-based mine in Canada and the origin of the mineralization was in debate. He identified that much of PGE mineralization is primary magmatic and PGE were concentrated into immiscible sulphide melt.
