Course Outline
This is a
diagnostic test. This test is for your own information and should be
used to determine if you have sufficient algebraic background to take
this course. It measures your proficiency in the algebra necessary to
take the course. Give yourself 30 minutes with no books or calculators
allowed. If you get 8 or more right, you probably have sufficient
algebra to follow the course. If you get 5-7 right, you probably still
have enough but may have some difficulties. If you get 4 or less right,
you may have substantial difficulties in this course.
If you are unsure on where you stand, please feel free to come talk
to me. Also, if you are having difficulties with the algebra, there is a
book available for sale at Agora and the bookstore, called "Succeeding
in Applied Calculus" which may help.
The solutions to the above diagnostic are C E A B C A A B E A. There is another one on Webassign (see below).
As mentioned in the course outline, there will be homework available on Webassign. Homework is not marked, but doing well in this course is all about practicing the techniques I teach to you until you understand them. So do questions until you understand!
To use Webassign, you will need a class key. The class key is uottawa 7957 4231
Here is a powerpoint presentation about using Webassign.
Here there are links to several past midterms and final
exams given by my colleague Richard Blute. Work with them for
practicing.

Here is a complete breakdown of the topics for each lecture this
semester, along with a list of suggested problems related to those
topics and typed notes based on those given by me and Dr. Blute. (Note
that there may be some variations, depending on the section you are in.)
If you have a previous edition of the textbook (5th, 6th or
7th), a list of problems for your edition is given below the
