Flow Cytometry and Cell Sorting

The Core Facility provides flow cytometry and cell sorting services to the entire University of Ottawa research community as well as to others in the Ottawa area. It is home to two Beckman Coulter analysers (Gallios and FC500) and a cell sorter (MoFlo Astrios EQ). Common applications include cell cycle, ploidy analysis, proliferation, apoptosis, immunophenotyping, live/dead assays and expression analysis. This technology can also be used to separate out individual mammalian and bacterial cells, extracellular vesicles, exosomes, and viruses. A skilled staff provides help with sorting, data acquisition, data analysis, and consultation for experiment design. Training is available to enable students to run the analytical cytometers themselves at reduced cost. A major part of our mission is to teach this technology to investigators, research associates and students. Equipment and Fees

Beckman Coulter MoFlo Astrios EQ Cell Sorter:

A high-speed jet-in-air sorter with digital electronics that can detect up to 17 colours, for a total of 19 parameters; capable of small particle sorting (200nm - 30um).

Excitation lasers:

355nm (3 detectors)

405nm (3 detectors)

488nm (7 detectors)

561nm (4 detectors)

642nm (4 detectors)

This instrument is located in a biosafety cabinet for sorting of human samples and other biohazardous samples. 

Fees of assisted cell sorting on the Astrios EQ

$50/hr for University of Ottawa members

$85/hr for non-University of Ottawa clients. 

Charges are accrued in 30 minutes increments with a minimum charge of 1 hour for cell sorting.


Beckman Coulter Gallios Flow Cytometer:


The flow cytometer is an ultra sensitive high speed flow analyser with 3 solid state lasers and 10 fluorescence colors. 

The instrument can analyze particle size ranges from 0.4 µm to 40 µm diameter.

Maximum Acquisition Rate: 25,000 events per second.

Excitation Lasers:

405nm (2 detectors)

488nm (5 detectors)

638nm (3 detectors)

Fees for unassisted cell analysis on thr Gallios instrument:

$20/hr for University of Ottawa's members

$30/hr for non-University of Ottawa's customers. 

Charges are accrued in 30 minutes increments with a minimum charge of 30 minutes. Instrument training cost is $100/person. Kaluza (analysis software) training cost is $100/person. 


Beckman Coulter FC500 Flow Cytometer:

Simultaneous 5-colour acquisition

2 Excitation lasers at 488 nm and 633 nm

Emission wavelengths: 

525nm ± 25, 575 nm ± 25, 610 nm ± 20, 675 nm ± 25 and 755 nm ± 25

Fees for unassisted cell analysis on the FC500 instrument:

$20/hr for University of Ottawa's members

$30/hr for non-University of Ottawa's customers. 

Charges are accrued in 30 minutes increments with a minimum charge of 30 minutes. Instrument training cost is $100/person. Kaluza (analysis software) training cost is $100/person.
