It is with great sadness that we announce that professor Keith Fagnou passed away in November 2009 after a short illness (http://www.science.uottawa.ca/fac/nouvelles-news/fagnou_nov09_en.html).

Pending matters related to his research group should be addressed to Mrs. Betty Yakimenko. The Fagnou group will continue to operate for most of 2010 and will be coordinated by Drs. Dave Stuart and Benoît Liégault. Professors Scaiano, Woo, Barriault and Beauchemin have assumed temporary or permanent supervision of members of the Fagnou group.

Several events to celebrate Keith Fagnou’s career and achievements are planned for 2010 and 2011. Further information will be posted as these events take shape.

Group Members, Past and Present (Nov 15, 2009)

Our research interests involve the discovery and creation of new and more efficient reactions for the preparation of molecules that find application in materials and medicinal sciences. Catalysis, in its many forms, lies at the foundation of our efforts - particularly the use of transition metal complexes as catalytic entities. A major focus of ongoing research is directed at changing the current practice of molecule pre-activation in the construction of new carbon-carbon bonds. Reliance on pre-activation is financially and chemically wasteful, providing compelling economic and environmental reasons to discover viable alternatives. In addition to developing new reactions and catalysts, we also validate our new reactions in the preparation of medicinal compounds and natural products via their total synthesis.
