In the map above, North is up. (Though it doesn't have to be: it's just a convention, like the fact that the hands on clocks go "clockwise" and not the other way, and the fact that we use the "right-hand rule" for the cross product. If sundials made in the southern hemisphere had become the standard, hands on clocks would go the other way round, and if the majority of people were left-handed, there'd probably be a "left-hand rule" for the cross product instead.)
